 1.    Finding Alternatives For Cheap

When finding replacement products, compare the costs of the alternatives with what you usually buy. If you’re on a budget, choose the replacement product that’s closest in price to the plastic-containing one.

You can find free plastic alternatives that can be similar in price to the usual products you buy. For instance, compostable bin liners are similarly priced to normal plastic bin liners. Shop around to you find the best deal.

2.    Be resourceful!

Wherever you can DIY! Grow or make your own products. Cook, bake, Create!!!
Think about the 6’s Rs.

  • Rethink

  • Refuse

  • Reduce

  • Reuse

  • Repair

  • Recycle

Repurpose objects you already have. Like jars! You do not need to buy a keep cup when you can repurpose an old jar.

By cooking at home, you are saving money on expensive takeaway food and beverages. Cooking at home is healthier and cheaper. If you are time-poor, cook ahead for two or three days and food prep for school or work.

Get creative! Utilise the objects in your house that you already have. This avoids buying new products, consequently saving $$$. Click here to find some inspiration.

3.   Don’t Be Fooled by Eco-Branding

Do not be fooled by ‘eco-friendly’ companies selling their products. Unless it is necessary to buy, then save your money! Use what you have first, then consider purchasing secondhand, then new. Use what you have to the end of its life first and let nothing go to waste. Purchasing secondhand items is a great way to cut down demand for plastic production use in a new product.

No need to spend your money on the beautiful cutlery bamboo set, when you have the items at home. Create your own travelling cutlery set with the knife, spoon, and fork you have in your kitchen.

Also, BYO (bring your own) bag and drink bottle can save you money as well!

4.  Reduce Cost at Home

If it is still putting a strain on your finances, try to find other areas in your life to cut down spending:

·       Know your waste – do a waste audit at home and see how you can cut out or simplify your waste

·       Identify unhealthy buying habits you can kick - stop buying lollies and chocolate

·       Use less gas, electricity, and water to lower your utility bill.

5.   Speak up to businesses

If you buy something that is packaged in plastic, or tough to recycle and repair, speak up to the business or manufacturer. You have the right to ask questions and provide suggestions for the companies that you're supporting.

Living plastic-free doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, it can be a cheaper way to live while improving the health of you and your family.
